How to play Sudoku: rules and first moves
Sudoku is a deduction puzzle, not an arithmetic test. Place the digits 1 to 9 so that none repeats in a row, column or 3×3 box.
The three rules of a 9×9 grid
Every row must contain the digits 1 through 9 once. The same is true of every column and each of the nine 3×3 boxes.
The numbers printed at the start are fixed clues. Fill an empty cell by considering all three areas it belongs to at the same time.
Finding your first certain number
Choose a row, column or box with several clues. For an empty cell, eliminate digits already present in its row, column and box. If only one possibility remains, write it in.
When several possibilities remain, use pencil notes and move to another cell. A confirmed digit may resolve a crossing area later.
