How to play Minesweeper: numbers, flags and safe moves
In Minesweeper, open every safe square without hitting a mine. Each number counts the mines in its eight neighbouring squares, including diagonals.
Read the numbers before opening
A 1 means exactly one adjacent square contains a mine; a 2 means two. The clue does not identify the direction, so compare neighbouring numbers.
If a 1 touches only one unopened square, that square must contain a mine. Flag it and inspect the other clues around it.
When is a square safe?
Once a number has as many identified adjacent mines as it indicates, its other unopened neighbours are safe with respect to that clue. Check overlapping clues before opening a shared square.
Field Ops makes the first opened square safe. This does not mean every later position is guaranteed to have a deduction-only solution.
