About Fanorona
Fanorona makes every connected line matter. On the 45-point Fanoron-Tsivy board, each side starts with 22 stones. Move toward an opposing line to capture by approach, or away from one to capture by withdrawal. If both apply, choose one. Three computer levels and shared-device play use the same rules. Native hints, saved undo history and local continuation help you revisit decisions; optional board enlargement gives narrow screens more room for precise selections.
How to play
Ivory goes first. Select a stone and a highlighted destination. Choose Approach or Withdrawal when the move offers both. After a capture, continue with the same stone or use End turn. Enlarge board opens a horizontally scrollable board; Fit board restores the compact view.
Rules in this version
- Move to an adjacent empty point along a drawn line. Diagonals exist only where the board connects them.
- Capturing is compulsory when available. Approach or withdrawal removes the consecutive enemy stones along the selected line; the two alternatives are not combined.
- A capture chain is optional and uses one stone. It cannot revisit a point or repeat its preceding direction.
- Capture every enemy stone or leave the opponent unable to move. This edition automatically draws the third occurrence of a position with the same side to move.
Tips for playing
- Compare the follow-up positions, not just the number captured. Withdrawal can open a different chain from approach.
- Ending a chain is a legal choice. Keep a vulnerable stone safe instead of taking an unnecessary extra capture.
Questions about this game
Does one move collect both approach and withdrawal captures?
No. Choose one capture type when both are available, then continue the chain only if you want to.
